Sir Michael Gambon, the beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. He was 82.
A statement on behalf of his wife, Lady Gambon, and son issued by publicist Clair Dobbs, said: “We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon. Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82. We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love.”
He was an acclaimed actor, having excelled in plays by Harold Pinter, Samuel Beckett and Alan Ayckbourn, and was best known for his roles in Harry Potter, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, Sleepy Hollow, The Insider and Gosford Park.
He was admired by generations of fellow actors, and was described as a “wonderful, limitless machine” and “a brilliant, magnificent trickster”.
