Charlotte taste-maker and influencer, Joey Hewell, is a gas station chicken fan and he’s not alone. For years local celebrities like Joey, WBTV reporter and documentarian Steve Crump and even our own Mix 107.9’s Ramona Holloway have been singing the praises of the delicious Southern fried poultry served up at gas stations.

Lots of folks who grew up in the South expect their local gas station to offer a menu that includes everything from chicken to potato wedges. For transplants from the North it might not seem to be the best mix of products. Sometimes the same spot will offer fishing bait in addition to fuel and tasty fried food.

Ramona says, “I was skeptical to even try it when I first moved to the South, but it takes just one bite and you understand the hype.”  Ramona is a fan of the bird at Nichols Food Stores at the gas station across from Amazon on Wilkinson Blvd. She says it is delightfully crispy and flavorful on the outside and juicy on the inside.

Mix 107.9 morning show producer, Eric Kelley II sides with Joey on the best spot for fuel and fried fowl. Both say that the Shell station on the corner of East and South Blvd in Charlotte is number one.

The fried chicken at the Shell station at 1500 Eastway Blvd in Charlotte is described by most with just one word “amazing.” Katherine C. wrote on Yelp that she lives near the gas station and Shamrock and Eastway and sometimes, “people throw their chicken wings in my yard while walking home. This doesn’t bother me as much as it should. Why? Because I know people are enjoying this incredible fried chicken.”

Kyrs M. says the Exxon station on Queen City Dr. off of Billy Graham Parkway should be your destination for fantastic fried chicken. For those who haven’t made the stop she adds, “don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.”

Have you ever? Will you ever eat chicken from a gas station? If so then where do you find the best fried yard bird?
