Neighbors in Cornelius reported sightings of a small black bear swimming near Lake Norman coves and Ramsey Creek Park, but the bear has since disappeared.

Concerned residents called the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, who appreciated the reports.

The bear was seen swimming in the lake and climbing onto land, appearing tired but unharmed.

Black bear sightings in the Charlotte area are common during this time of year as they pass through the region.

State wildlife officers advise staying calm and backing away slowly if encountering a bear.

According to the NC Wildlife website, “Black bears tend to be shy and non-aggressive toward humans. There has not been an unprovoked bear attack in North Carolina.”
