Kane Brown was on hand to honor his mentor Randy Travis at the 2021 CMT Artist of the Year event on Wednesday evening.

As Brown received a trophy for Artist of the Year from Nelly, he took the time to thank Travis for his contributions to the genre and for being an influence to his career.

“Randy, I just want to say, you are such an influence, man, and I love you to death,” said Brown. “You’re still doing your thing and your giving these kids [such a] good role model, you’re the man, so thank you for letting me do this.”

Brown also performed Travis’ hit, “Three Wooden Crosses,” which was a redeeming moment for the singer, “the first time I met you, you surprised me at a radio station and I couldn’t finish it,” Brown reminded Travis.
