As gas prices keep going up, some people are resorting to the old five-finger discount to fill up their tanks.

A High Point, NC gas station was robbed of nearly 400 gallons of gas by a thief who used a “remote control like object” to bypass the pump’s payment system.

“Once they bypass the pump, they don’t have to do anything. Flip the nozzle up, choose the grade and start filling,” owner Hardik Patel said. “And it doesn’t stop. They can fill up as much as they want. And we ended up finding about 398 gallons on the check.”

Surveillance video shows the person using the device, filling their tank, then waving more than a dozen cars to do the same.

All told, they made off with about $1,600 worth of fuel.

“I’ve never heard of it,” Patel said. “I’ve been the owner for seven years and in business for 15 years, I’ve never seen this happen or heard that people can bypass.”

Earlier this month, a Texas gas station was robbed of more than 1,000 gallons by thieves who siphoned it out of the station’s tank.
