A Florida woman who was unknowingly impregnated by her doctor’s sperm has been awarded $5.25 million in federal court. The settlement comes nearly four years after Cheryl Rousseau filed a lawsuit against Dr. John Coates III, claiming he impregnated her with his own sperm in a 1977 procedure. Rousseau says she had selected the sperm of a medical student who resembled her husband. The couple discovered the deception after their now-adult son submitted to a DNA test that identified Coates as his father. Rousseau had wanted a child with her husband but he had a vasectomy that could not be reversed, according to the complaint. How did this deception cause $5.25 million worth of pain and suffering?
