Despite schools reopening last year, a homeschooling boom is very much underway in the U.S. According to an Associated Press report, homeschooling remains “significantly above pre-pandemic levels” – despite dipping last year. Data covering 18 states shows homeschooling surged by 63 percent during the 2020-21 school year, and dropped off by just 17 percent during the current school year. One of the largest demographics making the switch is Black families, where homeschooling rates increased by five times in 2020.
