A year after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mecklenburg County public health director Gibbie Harris sits down for an in-studio interview with WBT’s Brett Jensen.

An array of topics were covered over the 30 minute conversation from how the community has fared through the threat of the virus to the importance of getting vaccinated. A featured part of National Public Health week designed to update everyone in Charlotte on the status of the virus.

Harris stressed that COVID-19 was the third leading cause of death in the United States last year, and this was the first time in history a communicable disease ever ranked in the top ten, according to data released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As of Thursday (4/8), nearly half of North Carolinians received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Out of those, 27% were considered fully vaccinated.
