A black man was shot and killed Wednesday in Elizabeth City, North Carolina by Pasquotank County sheriff’s deputies executing a search warrant, officials said.
Andrew Brown, Jr., 42, was killed at his home around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday. According to a witness, Brown was trying to drive away when he was fatally shot, but officials haven’t provided many details on the shooting. They have said the State Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the actions taken by deputies, and did not say what led up to Brown’s death.
The deputy, who has not been identified, is currently on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation by state officials, Pasquotank County Sheriff Tommy Wooten said.
Hundreds of people gathered in Elizabeth City on Wednesday night to protest Brown’s death and called for justice.
The city which sits roughly 85 miles northwest of the Outer Banks has caught national attention for the incident. As one of the latest shooting deaths by police throughout the country.
According to the Charlotte Observer, tensions rose between protesters and police last night as city council members met for an emergency meeting to discuss the incident. The group is demanding that body cam footage of the shooting be released immediately.
Wooten said there was no timeline for when the footage would be released to the public.
Brown’s death comes less than 24 hours after former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder in the killing of George Floyd. The details also emerge hours after 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant was fatally shot Tuesday night by police officers in Columbus, Ohio. The events of Floyd’s death last May sparked international protests and started a collective call for police accountability.
