Newly-elected Rep. Madison Cawthorn wasted no time throwing his weight behind a candidate in North Carolina’s 2022 U.S. Senate race. The 25-year-old announced his intentions to endorse Rep. Mark Walker as a Republican Senate nominee.
The battle to fill Richard Burr’s soon-to-be vacated seat has well-known politicians like Walker, along with outsiders such as Lara Trump dropping their names in the hat as the Republicans try to regain the majority back in the chamber they lost in November’s election cycle.
Cawthorn, an outsider who gathered the support of Trump’s base, defeated Democrat Moe Davis by nine-point percentage margin in the 2020 election. Upon hearing he had won the seat, the Republican tweeted, “cry more, lib” to Davis and others.
“Mark has been an ardent supporter of President Trump, a conservative stalwart, and I know we can trust Mark to stop the radical socialist agenda the democrats want to implement. His commitment to our community, faith and values is unparalleled,” Cawthorn told Fox News.
Walker praised Cawthorn by saying he is going to be “essential in helping our party expand and connect with the next generation of Americans. I am thankful for his endorsement and look forward to joining him in representing the great people of North Carolina in Washington.”
Cawthorn addressed the crowd outside the U.S. Capitol on Jan 6., telling those in attendance he voted not to certify the Electoral College results in Congress and called Republicans who voted to certify the results “spineless cowards.” The incumbent representative denounced the deadly riots saying the GOP “As a whole should have been much more wise about their choice of words.” Some have called for Cawthorn’s resignation after his actions to incite the insurrection at the Capitol.
Former North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory is rumored to be considering a Senate run in 2022. He would be among the top in the Republican primary, according to a December poll from BUSR/UNLV Lee Business School. Lara Trump was favorite with 24 percent, and McCrory, who hasn’t announced his intentions, a close second at 23 percent.
