Students in South Carolina can now take a virtual field trip to state parks as part of the Discover Carolina program offered by South Carolina State Parks..

On southcarolionaparks.com, the Discover Carolina program is described as:

Discover classrooms without walls, blue skies instead of bulletin boards and historic artifacts instead of textbooks during the Discover Carolina program! This program transforms South Carolina state parks and the South Carolina State House into living classrooms, providing educational opportunities that exceed the traditional learning experience. By combining statewide resources with state academic standards, Discover Carolina combines rare opportunities with classroom lessons, making for an exciting and memorable learning experience.

In today’s current educational environment, virtual option are in demand and South Carolina State Parks has done their part to continue their educational mission by adapting to the changing needs.

There are videos and other activities to teach science and history to kindergarten through fifth graders who can’t travel to State Parks in person.

The Discover Carolina program, which started with in person field trips, is offering lessons online that now include learning about plants and animals at Jones Gap State Park in the mountains, Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia, and Myrtle Beach State Park and others.

There is also a program about the hardships of plantation life before the Civil War at Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site in Beech Island.

The state Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism says it plans to offer more virtual field trips soon.
