Mecklenburg County officials plan to reopen the former Latta Plantation with an emphasis on educating visitors on slavery.
The Huntersville plantation was closed in 2021 after the nonprofit that operated the site made a racist post about Juneteenth.
Since then, county officials worked with advocates, historians and others and visited other plantations throughout the South to learn how they told their histories.
They are proposing three alternatives to introduce to the community including a possible visitor’s center, exhibits and various tours.
There will be input from the community and commissioners before a final decision is made. You can add your input  by filling out the survey here.
