Instagram makes teen accounts private as pressure mounts on the app to protect children

Instagram has introduced new “teen account” settings to protect young users, making millions of teen accounts private and restricting content.

The changes aim to address concerns about who teens interact with online and the content they see.

The update will automatically apply to users under 18, with 16- and 17-year-olds able to adjust settings with parental approval.

Instagram will also implement time limits and content controls for teen users, with plans to roll out the changes in select countries.

The move follows criticism of Meta’s handling of teen safety and aims to enhance parental supervision on the platform.

Parents and caregivers as well as teens can learn more about Teen Accounts by visiting Instagram.com/teenaccounts.
