Limited access remains in Western North Carolina due to dangerous road conditions and shortages of essential supplies.
The NC Department of Transportation advises that drivers cannot travel from North Carolina to Tennessee via I-40 or I-26.
On I-40 in North Carolina, a section three miles from the Tennessee state line partially collapsed into the Pigeon River.
On I-26 in Unicoi County, Tennessee, flooding destroyed both sides of the interstate bridge that runs over the Nolichucky River in Erwin.
Evacuees from the Asheville area are encouraged to use I-40 east or I-26 east, as many roads may be closed without online updates.
NCDOT said it is working on mapping detour routes, but said it’s likely most traffic will have to enter North Carolina and Tennessee through Virginia via I-81 and I-77
