Following a surge in paid subscribers, Netflix announced a price increase for all its subscription plans, including the first hike for its ad-supported plan.
The standard plan increased by $2.50 to $17.99 per month in the United States, three years since Netflix upped the pricing.
The monthly fee of Netflix’s ad-supported tier will increase by $1 to $7.99. The Premium tier, which supports four streams at once, will cost $24.99 a month, an increase of $2.
Adding an extra member to a primary account now costs $8.99 a month instead of $7.99.
The company cited investments in programming and delivering more value as reasons for the increase.
Netflix plans to continue expanding its content offerings, including live events and sports programming, to attract and retain viewers.
Co-chief executive Ted Sarandos highlighted the company’s focus on broadening its programming and exploring opportunities for live sports content.
“When you’re going to ask for a price increase, you better make sure you have the goods and engagement to back it up,” said Sarandos during Tuesday’s investor call. He mentioned new series and films that will be released in 2025.
