Deputies in Onslow County had an unexpected run-in with a massive alligator this week.

The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office said the gator—nicknamed “Pepe the Gator”—was spotted along Old 30 Road on Wednesday. Deputies estimate the reptile was roughly 10 feet long and weighed between 350 and 400 pounds.

Fortunately, Pepe didn’t pose a threat to anyone and was safely relocated. Photos shared by the sheriff’s office show the size and scale of the impressive creature.

According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, alligators are commonly found in coastal counties like Onslow, especially near swamps, marshes, and freshwater areas. Although they can look intimidating, alligator attacks on humans are considered rare.

Onslow County is located in eastern North Carolina, just north of Wilmington, and is home to Jacksonville and the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base.
