Charlotte Animal Shelter Moves Out From Under CMPD

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control has officially moved out from under the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and into the city’s General Services Department.
The transition, part of the city’s fiscal year 2026 budget, took effect July 1, 2025.
The move streamlines volunteer onboarding by eliminating the need for CMPD background checks, which often took months.
It also comes with a full rebrand: CMPD logos and references are being removed from uniforms, vehicles, and signage.
A new color scheme has already been released as part of the shelter’s updated look.
