Matt Doherty has faced difficult battles on the court throughout his career.
Outside of his stops at powerhouse college basketball programs as a coach, the starter on North Carolina’s 1982 National Championship team learned from the legend Dean Smith and played alongside Hall of Famers Michael Jordan and James Worthy. He returned to his Alma Mater to earn national coach of the year honors in 2001. However, two short years later, he was forced to resign from his dream job.
What went wrong? Why did this happen? How do you go from reaching the top of the mountain to falling off the cliff? How do you prepare for your next opportunity? You Rebound!
For Doherty, that meant recognizing the need to learn how to become a better leader. With the support and encouragement of family, friends, and respected colleagues he embarked on a leadership journey.
Since his time at UNC, Doherty went on to coach at Florida Atlantic University and SMU in addition to working as a basketball analyst for ESPN, an NBA scout for the Indiana Pacers, and associate commissioner of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
“The Coach” currently runs the Doherty Coaching Practice which includes executive coaching, seminars, and corporate talks. He continues to work in the media with weekly radio shows in Charlotte, N.C. on top-rated news talk heritage station WBT and dominant sports talker WFNZ. Doherty also contributes to the ACC Network as a color analyst for basketball games.
Matt is married to Kelly and has two children, Tucker and Hattie. They reside in Mooresville, NC.
Now in a straightforward and authentic manner, he invites you to a front-row seat inside his life journey through engaging and riveting stories of both his successes––and failures.
“Not everyone is a born leader,” says Doherty. “But EVERYONE can become a better leader. Whether coaching a sport, running a company, or leading your family there are skills that can be developed to put you and your organization in a position for success.”
