The Carolina Panthers have hired Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales as their next head coach.

Canales will be the third head coach hired since owner David Tepper purchased the team.

Canales has taken an interesting path to get to this point. The son of a pastor, a former boot salesman and substitute teacher, Canales spent most of his NFL career under Pete Carroll as a QB coach with the Seattle Seahawks where he worked with Russell Wilson and Geno Smith.

The hiring of Canales came as a bit of surprise to most. But new Carolina GM Dan Morgan has a connection with Canales as both worked in Seattle together.

Under Canales, Baker Mayfield flourished in Tampa Bay and had the best year of his NFL career.

Now Canales takes a shot to achieve similar results with Bryce Young in Carolina.
