Princess of Wales Kate Middleton has revealed she’s been diagnosed with cancer.

In a pre-recorded announcement released Friday, Middleton says she learned of her cancer when she was undergoing “major abdominal surgery” in January.

“The surgery was successful,” the 42-year-old says. “However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.”

Middleton goes on to say she and her husband, Prince William, are “doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.”

The mother of two has not revealed the type of cancer she’s battling.

The announcement comes just months after King Charles revealed he’s also fighting cancer.

The news also comes weeks after she was involved in a scandal over photo retouching.

On March 10, Mother’s Day in the UK, Kate celebrated by posting a picture of her three children and herself on social media. It was the first time the public had seen an official picture of Kate since December.

Numerous foreign news organizations, including Agence France-Presse, Reuters, Getty Images, and The Associated Press, picked up the photo.

Later, those agencies withdrew the picture, claiming that the royals may have altered it before it was made public.
