Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is urging North Carolinians to prioritize water safety during Memorial Day Weekend by offering tips on boating safety and insurance.

With National Safe Boating Week approaching, Causey emphasizes the importance of wearing life jackets, avoiding alcohol while boating, and having the right insurance coverage in place.

“Beaches, lakes and pools will be crowded this Memorial Day weekend,” said Commissioner Causey. “The best way to stay safe on the water is to always wear a life jacket, follow safe boating practices like avoiding alcohol, and prepare for the unexpected by having the proper insurance plan in place.”

The U.S. Coast Guard reported 4,040 boating accidents in 2022, resulting in 636 deaths and $63 million in damages. To stay safe on the water, always wear a life jacket, refrain from drinking alcohol, check the weather conditions, and ensure proper insurance coverage for your boat.

Additionally, parents are reminded of the risks of child drownings, and beachgoers are advised to be cautious of rip currents and follow safety protocols.
