For the first time in U.S. history, the number of White Americans has dropped as the country has become more diversified, according to the Census Bureau. Data released Thursday reveals the he share of the White population fell from 63.7 percent in 2010 to 57.8 percent in 2020 — marking the lowest number on record.

Meanwhile, the number of people in other racial or ethnic groups climbed in many states; California, for example, saw a 2.2 percent growth in its Hispanic population, while the number of White residents fell by nearly 6 percent, the Census Bureau reports.

“The U.S. population is much more multiracial and much more racially and ethnically diverse than what we have measured in the past,” said Census Bureau official Nicholas Jones.

Will the number of White residents continue to drop until we’re all one race someday?
