Major retailers are removing self-checkout lanes due to retail crime across the country, with reports of Walmart stores in California roping off their self-checkout lanes.

Target has quietly removed self-checkouts in San Francisco, and other chains are limiting self-checkout to customers with ten items or less.

Retail theft has increased, with some retailers using artificial intelligence to combat theft at self-checkout.

The National Retail Federation reported $112 billion in losses to theft in 2022.

Overall, while some shoppers find self-checkout lines efficient and prefer them for their speed and convenience, others have concerns about their impact on employment and the potential difficulties they pose for certain demographics.

Despite the trend, some retailers are still using self-checkout technology.
