As more states, including North Carolina, legalize sports betting, gambling addiction hotlines are receiving more calls, particularly from young men in their 20s and 30s.

North Carolina recently legalized mobile sports betting, leading to a surge in wagers during events like the ACC basketball tournament and March Madness.

Critics warn of the addictive nature of sports betting, likening it to a “gambling heroin” epidemic, and call for restrictions on gambling advertisements.

Betting apps offer self-imposed limits and options for users to ban themselves if they recognize a gambling problem.

If you or someone you know is struggling with gambling addiction, help is available through the NC Problem Gambling Helpline and the National Helpline.
