The Mount Holly police officer who was killed in the line of duty has been identified as Tyler Avery Herndon, 25. Officer Herndon served less than two years in the Mount Holly Police Department.

According to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police, gunshots were exchanged Friday between a Mount Holly Police Officer and a suspect of a breaking and entering call at around 3 am.

Joshua Tyler Funk, 24, received treatment at the hospital, then “transported to the Gaston County Jail, where he remains in their custody,” CMPD said. He is charged with first-degree murder for the shooting of a police officer.

“When officers arrived, they encountered an armed subject. During the encounter, several shots were fired between the subject and several Mount Holly police officers, in addition to a Gaston County police officer who responded to the incident,” CMPD said in a news release.
