Carolina Panthers former quarterback, Sam Darnold and the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a one-year contract, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
With Jimmy Garoppolo signing with the Las Vegas Raiders and Brock Purdy and Trey Lance both recovering from injuries, Darnold adds to the 49ers’ quarterback depth.
Darnold, 25, finished 4-2 during the final four games for the Panthers after being activated off injured reserve. He threw seven touchdowns to three interceptions and rushed for two touchdowns.
The Panthers received Darnold in a trade with the Jets during the 2021 season.
In the team’s rebuilding phase, the hope is to draft a quarterback in the 2023 draft after acquiring the first overall pick from the Chicago Bears in a trade.
